Summer Reading Challenge

From June 10 through August 9, the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library will offer programs for children birth through teens. The majority of this summer’s programming will be virtual. Because of this, program registration will close two days early. Families will be contacted when the free program materials are ready to be picked up.

It’s always important to support your child’s summer learning to keep reading and other literacy skills sharp. Our programs will help your child maintain abilities in traditional literacy as well as STEAM. But what allows our Summer Reading Challenge to be meaningful and productive is that the emphasis is on FUN. This summer’s theme is Tales and Tails and programs will feature storytimes, crafts, STEAM, and live animals!

This summer we are very excited to continue to use to track reading and activities, including the Great Greensburg Scavenger Hunt! Babies, kids, teens, and adults can all participate to earn raffles tickets for prizes by logging their reading minutes, as well as completing suggested activities. We have prizes for the children and teens, as well as for adults! For more information on our Beanstack, including how to get the app, click here. To enter Beanstack from a browser, click here. In an effort to support the local groups who take care of all kinds of “tails,” the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library will be a drop off location for donations for County Animal Response Team (CART) and Wayward Whiskers, both of whom work to take care of animals in need. Drop off items from June 14 to August 9 during regular business hours listed above. More info on the two organizations and the kinds of acceptable donations can be found here or at

The Great Greensburg Scavenger Hunt will be hosted by the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library and Downtown Greensburg Project! From June 14 to August 9, you and your family will see familiar and new places in the Greater Greensburg Area as you scavenger hunt for secret codes at locations in the area. Find the “secret code” at the listed local attraction and business that make our region so special. Collect enough badges and earn raffle tickets for prizes! Collect the codes using the free Beanstack app. Visit our Beanstack page for more info.
